The Battle of Flodden Field was undoubtedly the most famous confrontation between the English and Scots ever fought on English soil, between an invading Scots army under King James IV and an English army commanded by the Earl of Surrey.
It took place eight miles to the north west of Wooler near the village of Branxton on September 9th, and was a decisive victory for the English. For the Scots it was a huge disaster, and wiped out the majority of the Scottish elite who lay dead on the battlefield at the end of the day.
